ASK THE CAPTAIN

Q. My engine is overheating at high speed. I changed the impeller and thermostat, cleaned the heat
enchanger and oil cooler, topped off coolant and, checked sea strainer. It still overheats?

A. The raw water hose from the strainer to engine is weak and collapses at high speed. This should
have been the second thing you checked. Change the hose.

Q. Every time there is a hurricane, there is damage to my boat. The value of the damage is always $10 under the deductible. What should I do?

A. The next time we have a hurricane, loosen all lines and open all seacocks. Your boat will be totaled. Take the insurance procedds, and move to Utah..
Q. My engine is overheating. I checked the impeller and it was ok. Then I changed the raw water intake hose that was leaking; that did not help. I checked the impeller again, this time it was trashed. I installed a new impeller; the water flow from the exhaust was still poor. What am I doing wrong?

Signed: Stuck at the Dock

A. Dear Stuck at the Dock, the first thing you are doing wrong is trying to fix it yourself. Everyone knows that a retired accountant should never touch a wrench. Take off the top of your oil cooler and you will probably find two big pieces of zinc anode lodged in the elbow and restricting the water flow. When you check your zincs, don't you look for the old pieces? Now call in a real mechanic and have him replace the water pump that you have probably burned out!
CAPTAIN TIPPY'S TIPS
- Keep those metal spray cans from leaving an ugly ring!  Keep the cans in a koozie!

- Losing the rubberized backing from you carpet??  Try covering with carpet glue and sunbrella!

- Everyone knows that ON and OFF is great for getting the yellow stains off of your boat. But if you do not like that dangerous chemical, try rubbing lightly with Barkeepers Friend.
